From the stoop to a voting plan: a composite field-to-GOTV follow-through
Composite example: a mid-size local-shaped race had walk-list IDs sitting in MiniVAN and no owner for the evening text. The operating lesson is that follow-through is a queue, not a weekend blast.
Situation
A mid-size local-shaped race, weeks to election. The field program existed. Walk-list IDs sat in MiniVAN. The SMS vendor was blast-only. There was no voting-plan field and no owner for the evening text.
No town names. No office. No invented turnout. The useful fact is the gap: IDs with no next action.
Constraint
A campaign manager and two organizers. They could not staff a 24/7 inbox. Counsel had to approve language before anything left the phone.
Intervention (process only)
Nightly ID export. Same-day four-line follow-up on permissioned numbers. Replies classified: support, question, volunteer, vote plan, escalate. Friday voting-plan calls on confirmed supporters only.
The work was a queue with an owner, not a weekend blast to the whole turf walk.
What the file looked like
Qualitative only: fewer “ID only, no next action” records, and a visible owner on open threads. No percentages. No win. No dollars.
What we would not do again
Sending a recap blast to the whole turf walk. Calling IDs with no plan the weekend before. Treating silence as a reason to stack five identical texts.
Reusable checklist
One queue: ID → same-day text → classify reply → voting-plan call.
One owner for the inbox on the night of the shift.
One status field the field, SMS, and call teams share.
Counsel-approved language before the first send.
Confirmed support only on GOTV dials.
If this were a cleared client
We would publish a named office if permitted, dated windows, and only the defined-results metrics in the written agreement. Until then, this stays a labeled composite.
A same-day, two-way message that names the conversation you just had, asks one next question, and is staffed for the reply. Not a recap blast to the walk list.
A follow-up text starts a conversation when it is permissioned, specific to the last exchange, and written for a reply you are prepared to handle. Blast copy that ends in a link and a slogan is a one-sided send.
A GOTV call program is a sequence: confirm support, capture a voting plan, remind through every legal window, and work the people who go silent. Extra Saturday hours on an unclean list is not that sequence.

Next step
If follow-up is the job, someone has to work the replies.
Tell us the race, the list, and the election date — and whether the gap is field follow-up, conversational SMS, or GOTV.
